It's notoriously difficult to make a relationship endure in the entertainment industry, but couples like Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta, who have been married for over three decades, and Elton John and David Furnish, who entered into a civil partnership in 2005 before marrying in 2014, are defying the odds.
As February celebrates love and relationships, let's take a look at some of the Hollywood couples who have stood the test of time.
In 2003, Viola Davis said she prayed for a husband and "wanted a big Black man from the South who looked like a football player, who already had children, who maybe had been married before." Weeks later she met her future husband Julius Tennon in L.A. on the set of the medical drama series "City of Angels," and they were married later that same year.
The "How to Get Away with Murder" actress told People magazine the secret to a long-lasting marriage is patience and taking it day by day.
"It's about the everyday," she said at the time. "I think that, that's what people forget when they fall in love with someone and it's exciting."
Although Shakira and Piqué don't plan to marry, the pair met at the music video for her 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)." In 2012, Shakira revealed she was pregnant with their first child.
After over a decade together, Shakira told 60 Minutes she wasn't looking to get married and preferred the excitement of being Piqué's girlfriend.
Ken met his wife while they were both practicing medicine at a hospital in Los Angeles. The pair married in 2004. Soon after, Ken left medicine to pursue his love for comedy while his wife remained a doctor.
"That's why I married her. ... The reason why we're married is because Tran and I have an exact same sensibility of what we love in comedy," Ken told NPR.
In 2007, Tran gave birth to twin daughters, Zooey and Alexa. When Ken got the call to be part of the "Hangover" movie, Tran had been battling an aggressive breast cancer. She credits Ken's strength with helping the couple get through that time.
“Ken was so strong for me. I really needed that,” Tran told ABC News’ Amy Robach. “But you know, I knew he was stressed out too.”
Gloria and Emilio married in 1978 after mutual friends introduced the two in 1975. Over the years, they said their shared passion for music and dedication to their marriage has kept them together.
Their first date was a trip to watch the film "Young Frankenstein," where Gloria told People she thought to herself, “I knew I was going to marry this man.”
“When it’s real love, it gets better,” Emilio told People. “It’s all about respect and love and communication. When you have a great foundation, it becomes easy.”

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds met on the movie set of "Green Lantern" in 2010 but didn't have a traditional start to their relationship.
"We were friends and buddies, and then about a year and a half later, we actually went on a double date but we were dating separate people," Reynolds told Bazaar.
Flash forward two years, and Lively and Reynolds had a secret ceremony at the Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina in 2012. The pair now share three daughters together: James, Inez and Betty.
“Everything we do in life, we do together,” Lively told Vogue. “I get to share my life with the person he’s become, and we get to grow from there.
Denzel Washington and Pauletta Washington
Pauletta and Denzel first met in 1977 on the set of the TV movie "Wilma" and shortly after started dating. However, not everything came easy for Denzel; Pauletta turned down his marriage proposals three times. The pair finally did marry June 25, 1983.
The couple share four children together, John David, Katia, Olivia and Malcom. In 1995, Denzel and Pauletta renewed their vows in South Africa. When asked what the key to marriage is, Denzel told People: "I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut!"
"My wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids, and protected them and sacrificed for them. She did the heavy lifting," Denzel told People.
Elton John and David Furnish
Elton John met David Furnish in October 1993, and John told Parade he "was attracted to David immediately." During an at-home dinner party with friends and family, John proposed to Furnish in May 2005.
The pair entered into a civil partnership on Dec.21 that same year and married in 2014 when same-sex marriage was legalized in Britain. They welcomed their first child, son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John in 2010, and their second son, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John in 2013.
“When we married in 2014, it felt like that fact was accepted by the world,” John said on Instagram. “For David and I, being able to openly love and commit to one another, and for that to be recognized and celebrated is what makes life truly worth living.”
